DC Universe Vol.1: JLA by alexmax DC Universe Vol.1: JLA by alexmax
Just for fun, here's me taking a stab at the DC superheroes in an animated type style. Inspired by the Bruce Timm cartoons and movies, but at the same time trying not to copy them. I had so much fun doing this that I'd like to try doing some other "sets" of characters (hence why I called it Vol. 1!), and put my own spin on some of them.

Of course I had to begin with the JLA, and my favorite JLA lineup is the one from the relaunch in the mid 90's. It had the best contrast of personalities with seasoned veterans, younger heroes, reluctant members, etc.

Here is what I was thinking as I did each design...

Superman: My favorite. More athletic than hulking (so the mild-mannered reporter persona can be believable). The "S Shield" should be as big as possible.

Green Lantern: Kyle Rayner, my second favorite comic character. A cross between his first two looks, kind of like what he has in the comics these days, except I don't like the white gloves and the logo on black. Slimmer, and younger, than any other hero.

Batman: Hard to make Batman look unique. Picked my favorite look for him.

Wonder Woman: Adam Hughes boots, Byrne's bracelets, current belt, big tiara.

The Flash: Wally West. Uncovered eyes to distance him from the JLU design. On the thin side like Kyle, but with muscled legs.

Aquaman: late 90's version. A guy living in the depths of the sea should be huge to withstand that kind of pressure. Monster calves to swim.

Martian Manhunter: More "squared" than the JLU version.

Decided to begin reviewing each of your character line-ups one by one, starting with this one. I hope you enjoy and appreciate the feedback I give:

1. Superman: I agree with you on the physique. I feel that Superman should look muscular, but not go too "overboard" with it. I kind of like the juxtaposition of incalculable strength and someone who is physically fit but not totally ripped. I also don't mind the size of the "S" shield, though I do lament your decision to keep the underwear on the front, as that is ultimately the only bad thing about an otherwise perfect superhero costume. Seriously. Without the tights, it would be a perfect superhero costume.

2. Batman: My personal favorite look for him would actually be his Injustice Gods Among Us armor, or alternatively his armor in the upcoming Arkham Knight. I kind of prefer Batman with armor to be honest, rather than just gray spandex. I also hate the underwear on the front, so between it all, I'm going to have to disagree with you on Batman's look.

3. Wonder Woman: Pretty much the classic look, with specific takes on different parts being taken from all over like you said. It's good overall, although I myself do have to admit to liking it whenever Wonder Woman's bracelets are gold and/or featuring a star design. But the classic silver looks good too, so I don't have much to complain about this one.

4. Flash: Myself, I prefer the JLU design of the mask, but I can understand wanting to do your own thing as well. Flash's costume is one of the very, very few superhero costumes that I would argue is pretty much "perfect", and thus I approve of you not making any real major changes here. Myself, I might have considered making the boots red, but I don't mind them in golden yellow. So good work here. Making him thinner was also a good move, since the Flash having a lean build makes sense for what is basically the ultimate runner, who tend to be lean.

5. Green Lantern: I kind of like John Stewart more than Kyle Rayner, but Kyle's a good character, and the design you did for him does look good. I have to give you credit for not using his original 1990s costume, which I don't like and consider overrated. This design is better, and like Flash, I'd agree with you that he benefits from being thinner and leaner. The only thing about this design that I would change is not making his fingers bare. Those bare fingers should have been covered with a black glove of some kind. Other than that, good design.

6. Martian Manhunter: While I think you got the physique down pretty well, I really wish you'd gone with his later costumes, because his classic costume's one of the worst. The underwear and buccaneer boots just doesn't look good, and honestly, his being a Martian instead of a human doesn't make it good. Thus, I'd have much preferred you go with his New 52 redesign, which keeps his mostly bare-chested look and the cape, but gives him pants instead of the underwear/buccaneer boots combo. So to sum it up, good build, bad costume choice.

7. Aquaman: This is, along with the Flash I think probably you're strongest design in this line-up. Much as I have a soft-spot for Aquaman's green/orange color scheme, I do kind of like Aquaman's "bare-chested with Roman gladiator" look from the 90s for several reasons; the bare-chest makes sense for someone living underwater and also separate from human society, it's good fan-service, and given that Aquaman's bulletproof it's not like he needs to worry about protecting his torso from gunfire. The armor bit akin to a Roman Gladiator is also nifty looking, as is the harpoon hand. So in all, I think this is a good design, and one you rendered nicely.

Overall, I think this is a solid start to your DC character line-ups, with Batman,  Martian Manhunter, and Superman's designs being disappointing overall but the rest all looking pretty good for the most part. And, irrespective of the outfits chosen, I think you did a good job getting everyone's physiques and facial expressions down pat.

And that's all my feedback for this first set. I hope you found it helpful and worthwhile, and if not, I apologize for that.

Ok, now that I've read this one. Sorry you don't like the "red trunks" look for Superman. In my opinion with out the red trunks Superman looks bad (and no, red belts, or yellow belts don't do the trick), like he is wearing thermal underwear. Live-action, as in the Zack Snyder movies, it's even worse. The red trunks would help conceal the massive package they made to the sculpted suit. It looks ridiculous. Same goes for Batman. At least the movie costume doesn't have the popped-collar look of the New52 suit, but that's the only positive thing I can say about it.

I disagree, personally. I think MoS Superman is the best Superman costume ever. For me, the trunks are what looks ridiculous. But, that's a difference in taste. Old Versus New.

But, I do appreciate the feedback to my feedback, and now that I know you're back, I'll complete my review series.

I'm partial to the 90s look, but I'm aware the orange/green look has become much more popular since it made its comeback in 2004 or so.

Thank you. The backgrounds was to give the whole idea a different spin. There's so many lineups like these in DA, the backgrounds was something I hadn't seen anyone do, or at least not exactly this way.

I really love the way you portraited each superhero and I also enjoy the way you placed a bit of their environment into this piece.
Its a great idea to make these sets with your own spin on them, I think Its a usefull way to practise and develop your own style and maybe explore the different styles of other artists while having fun.

The one and only League of the Justice.

Dude, you did this one wicked and crisp, like true vector quality art should be done. Even if you didn't aim for that ;) Adding various background is a nice finishing touch. How many hours you were making this picture?

By the way, original file is big, but you set it to 1280 width or such and one cannot scale it to see it in it's greatest, full glory. Most of the people have big monitors nowadays and deviantArt (and web browser) automatically scale it to fit in width. And most people is too lazy or uninclined to download file to view it. Just a hint, otherwise - great job!

Thank you. I currently have a laptop with better screen resolution but, for the sake of continuity, I kept uploading the rest of the lineups in the smaller size of the original JLA picture (which was done like 4 years ago). As far as hours as it takes me to do one of these? Hmm, hard to tell, I've never timed it, but a fairly long time.

That lineup is actually not bad at all. Can't promise anything. It's been a long time since I've done any of these. Just lost the "need" to do them anymore. Maybe I should try again.

Excellent Choice or Roster This is the First Rendition of The Justice League I remember (aside from super friends but that always felt more like a Farce and hence was not counted)

I think this was the first time DC used the "top shelf" heroes together after Crisis '86, before that it was the Giffen roster with Booster Gold, Blue Beetle, etc. For some reason it was believed that having them all in the Justice League was too corny. I bet Super Friends had a lot to do with that hehehe

I'm kinda with you on the white gloves. There's really no reason for them to be on a superhero called the GREEN Lantern.

I gotta say, your Kyle Rayner is pretty good. He's all "Hey guys! Check this out!"

I'm a little disappointed that they decided to have Rayner use the white gloves just so he can fit better with Hal's look. It doesn't matter, it's not like I've liked anything DC has done in almost a decade.

Thanks for the comment. Glad you liked this.
